Sinus Lift

What is sinus lift?

Sinus lift is also called sinus augmentation is a surgery procedure that means that the dental surgeon adds bone material to the upper jaw in the area of molars and premolars to make it taller. This dental surgery procedure is usually performen by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Sinus lift have become popular in the past 15 years as more dental patients are getting dental implants to replace their missing teeth.

Why is a sinus lift necessary?

When there is not enough bone substance in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw, a sinus lift surgery is needed. There are several reasons for sinus lift. First of all, many people who have lost teeth (back teeth or molars) in their upper jaw do not have enough bone for implants to be placed, or bone may have been lost because of gum disease (periodontal disease). Once teeth are lost, our bone begins to be absorbed back into the body. If teeth have been missing for a long time, there often is not enough bone left to place implants.

How is sinus lift performed?

First of all, an x-ray is taken before the procedure, so the dental surgeon can study the anatomy of your jaw and sinus. Then the dental surgeon cuts the gum tissue near the premolars and molars exposing the bone. Bone-graft material is then packed into the space where the sinus was, above the jaw. The gum tissue is then stitched closed.

What kind of materials are used for a sinus lift?

Synthetic materials are used, which can stimulate bone formation.

When will I get the implants?

First the sinus lift is performed, then there is a healing period. The dental implants will be placed into the upper jaw only four to nine months later. Your dental surgeon will inform you about the correct time.

How will I feel after the sinus lift surgery?

Patients may have some swelling, or may bleed from the mouth or nose. Patients should avoid blow the nose or sneeze, because these activities can cause the bone-graft material to move, and can cause the stitches to loosen. The dentist will give the patient pain medication, antibiotics and an antimicrobial mouthwash to help prevent infection. After 7 to 10 days the sutures will be removed.

Is the sinus lift painful?

Sinus lift is performed under local anaesthesia. So it isn’t painful. Most patients have only a little discomfort after a sinus-lift procedure.
